It Started With Vocal Nodules!
Years ago when I was beginning my career as a singer in L.A. I wanted to make sure that I was singing correctly. I actively took voice lessons from a prominent teacher to build my thin voice that lacked power. BUT, I continually had vocal problems, including nodules on my vocal cords. WHY?
I Wasn’t Being Taught to Sing Correctly!
Out of desperation, and fearing that I just wasn’t cut out for a career as a singer, I went to see 92 year old MAESTRO GIUSSEPPE BALESTRIERI.
His method was BEL CANTO SINGING, an old Opera method, and it was directly opposite of what I had just been learning with my former teacher. I didn’t like that he was asking me to ‘sing out’ and ‘let go’ of my voice since I had just gotten over another bout with vocal nodules. I wasn’t sure that I trusted his method,
But In 4 Weeks My Whole Life Changed
Maestro Balestrieri saved my voice and my career! After 4 weeks I learned to change the way I sang, and as I quickly learned the basics of Bel Canto singing my voice got better and stronger. And I have never had another vocal problem again.
What Is Bel Canto Singing?
BEL CANTO IS ALL ABOUT:
- An open sound
- A warm, supported voice
- Smooth, connected phrasing
- Relaxed, yet dynamic breath support
- One voice. No break, no chest, no head voice. Just One Voice.
But Bel Canto Singing Was Rather Esoteric
Much later in my career, as I started to teach voice, I found that what I had been taught was more experiential than practical. It was difficult to explain what Maestro Balestrieri had been demonstrating.
The Lawrence Vocal System Was Born
And so, I set about breaking down the concepts of Bel Canto so that I could teach them in a straight forward, easy to understand language. Personally, I like to know the mechanics of things, and so as well as explaining a concept that the left brain could understand, I also learned how to explain the mechanics of Bel Canto on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

- Breath “Energy”
- Conscious Breathing “The Engine” - powers the energy
- Placement “Resonance Chamber” - amplifies the energy
- The Open Throat “The Portal” - directs and colors the energy
- The Organs of Speech “The Articulators” - form the sound
- The Legato Line* “The Link” - creates an unimpeded flow of sound
- Alchemy* “The Etheric Process” - transforms sound into emotion
- # 6 and #7 are concepts that were never taught as part of my Bel Canto instruction, but are integral to the Lawrence Vocal System.
